We want to make sure that we can provide the best resource to y'all, so here are some guidelines on how to take and upload the pictures for the chart!
We encourage you to read this page in its entirety, but the most important things we are looking for are:
One nail in focus (we will zoom in on one nail, even if there are multiple)
Solid-colored or otherwise plain background (please no toilets or other distracting imagery in the background)
Direct lighting that showcases the special effects of the polish well
Original photos - please only upload photos you have taken yourself.
Some things we are not concerned about are nail length or skill level. Read on to learn more. ⬇
We encourage people with all nail lengths to contribute to the All the Combos chart. No nail length will be favored over other nail lengths. As long as there is enough length for us to see the color and effects, we are happy to have your swatch!
Just as with nail length, we welcome swatchers of all skill levels. Some of the basic things we expect of all swatchers are;
Reasonable clean-up (little to no polish on skin).
Even application of the polish to the nail.
Fresh and unchipped swatches, so that we can see all of the pretty effect.
No cat fur in nail polish (sorry, we know this one can be hard).
Please check and see if a combo has already been added before submitting! Because of processing time, there is a chance we will get duplicate pictures; in that case, we will default to using the first picture submitted, and only change that if another picture better showcases the effect of the topper.
Already swatched the mani and just want to share it? Feel free to share it in our Discord!
A lot of Holo Taco's base polishes are meant to be full-coverage in 2-3 coats. As such, swatches should also be full-coverage (unless you're doing bare nails + toppers!).
We also want the swatches to accurately reflect what the toppers look like when applied to the nail. Please only do one coat of the topper, painted on evenly and not sponged. We understand some toppers are thicker than others, and some disappear into the base coat, but having a standard thickness/application method will be most helpful for others.
Want to fill in a lot of boxes in one go? Feel free to layer your combos and take a picture at each step, and submit them individually.
For example;
Full Charge + Purple Flakie
Full Charge + Purple Flakie + Matte
Full Charge + Purple Flakie + Matte + Galactic US
Full Charge + Purple Flakie + Matte + Galactic US + Matte
We want to best showcase the polish combo, which means in-focus photos, as much as we love blurry holo. Macro lenses make this easier, but here are some helpful tips to reach the same effect with a phone camera:
Holding the phone further away from the nail can help get it in focus. You might be able to zoom in on the camera app to fill the screen depending on the quality of your phone camera.
Good lighting will help the camera focus.
If the camera is not staying focused on your nail, having another object close behind it can help.
The All the Combos chart is about being able to compare the different polishes, which we can only do with relatively consistent lighting. As such, we would appreciate photos with a good white balance (i.e., not yellowed from sunlight in the 'golden hour,' or overly colored by RGB lights) that accurately reflect what the polish looks like in real life.
Please pay attention to glares that might obscure the nails; these can often be lessened by changing the angle of the nail in relation to the camera or light source.
Additionally, different formulas may react better to different kinds of lighting. While Unicorn Skins often look best under indirect or diffused lighting, linear holos often look best under direct lighting that can show off the holo and the color.
Many of the special effects of polish can be best captured with two light sources (e.g., a lamp to your right and a flashlight to your left). Having two light sources often helps showcase a polish's shift and can give holo a direct lighting source.
We don't want to detract from the holo, or any of the other special effects! That includes backgrounds. Plain or out-of-focus backgrounds can highlight the polishes the best; we recommend a black background or the bottle of polish that you're swatching. At the very least, please no toilets đź’©
The chart uses square images with the nail angling from the upper right of the frame to the lower left. To make it easier for the volunteers to add the pictures to the chart, we ask that submitted pictures follow this format.
In order to make comparing combos easier, please do your best to have your finger in the "Classic Simply Angle."
Not only does it standardize the combo chart, but the angle also keeps the focus on the colors and effects.
You are welcome to watermark your images! If you do so, we recommend keeping it close to the nail so that there is less chance of it potentially being cropped off as we standardize image size and nail angle. Please keep the watermark off of the nail itself.
We have a lot of ground to cover, so we welcome swatch stick and swatch wheel combo pictures. We still ask that they be cropped to showcase just one 'nail,' as above. See the photo for an example.
Submitted photos should be in a standard format, such as .jpg, .png, or unanimated .gif. This will help make sure that your submission goes through smoothly.
Please do not send animated .gifs as a submission, but we would love to see them in our Discord!
